Rubber Jellyfish The balloon documentary

Take action

Get Involved

Rubber Jellyfish did not change any laws on its own. Every ban it has helped pass started with one person deciding to show it to other people.

Choose your way in

Three routes, ordered by the time each one takes. Start with whichever one fits.

  • A green sea turtle swimming over a shallow reef.
    An evening

    Attend a screening

The easiest place to start. Community screenings run worldwide, often with a Q&A from the filmmaker or a local marine conservation group.

    See the screenings calendar

  • Bags and bins of plastic litter collected by volunteers on a beach.
    A few weeks

    Host a screening

For community groups, activists, festivals and universities. We provide a complimentary high-resolution download of the full or reduced-length film, and can arrange remote screenings using access codes instead of a venue.

    How to host a screening

  • A bunch of coloured balloons above a rocky shoreline by the sea.
    A class period

    Bring it into your classroom

For teachers and educational institutions. The film is on ClickView in Australia, New Zealand and the UK, and comes with a free teacher workbook covering the science, a biodegradability experiment and a literature review.

    Resources for educators

This approach already works

  • 80+ locations have screened the film, hosted by groups including Wildscreen, Sea Shepherd, Balloons Blow, Algalita, NOAA and Southern Cross University
  • 3 local governments have banned balloon releases – Fremantle (WA), Kennebunk (Maine) and Bainbridge Island (Washington)

Each of those bans followed someone putting the film in front of an audience that could act on it.

Watch it first – it is free, and it is a far better advocate than we are. If you would rather understand the science before you act, the research is set out in full on The Issue.
